OSRS: How to Get to Dragon Defender
The Dragon Defender is one of the most coveted OSRS items for melee training in Old School RuneScape (OSRS). It offers a significant boost to your offensive stats, providing a fantastic alternative to shields for those focused on damage output. While it is second only to the Avernic Defender (a rare drop from the Theatre of Blood), the Dragon Defender is far more accessible and commonly used, making it a must-have for most players on their combat journey.
In this guide, I'll walk you through the steps required to obtain the Dragon Defender efficiently, starting from the prerequisites and going all the way through to the final grind.
Step 1: Requirements
To use the Dragon Defender, you need at least 60 Defence. However, that's not the only requirement. You must also meet the following conditions to access the Warrior's Guild and start your journey towards obtaining the Dragon Defender:
Attack + Strength levels must total 130 or more, or you must have 99 in one of these skills.
Once you meet these requirements, you can access the Warrior's Guild, which is where you'll be farming the tokens needed to fight for the defender.
Step 2: Access the Warrior's Guild
The Warrior's Guild is located near Burthorpe, Catherby, and Trollheim. To enter the guild, your Attack and Strength levels must add up to 130 or more, or you need to have 99 in either skill.
Once inside, you'll need to start collecting Warrior's Guild tokens. There are several mini-games available, but the Armour Reanimation Station is the most efficient method for earning tokens.
Step 3: Armour Reanimation Station
At the Armour Reanimation Station, you will reanimate different types of armor (from bronze to rune) into NPCs that you can fight. The difficulty of the NPC depends on the armor you reanimate. For example:
Bronze reanimations spawn NPCs with 10 HP and level 11 combat.
Rune reanimations summon NPCs with 120 HP and level 138 combat.
The tokens you earn depend on the tier of armor you reanimate:
Bronze = 5 tokens per kill
Rune = 40 tokens per kill
This method is highly efficient because the NPCs drop the armor pieces back upon death, and if the NPC despawns before you kill it, you can simply ask Shanomi (the non-combat NPC) to return the armor pieces to you. You do not lose the armor sets.
Step 4: Black Armour for Reanimation
Since your combat stats will likely be low when you begin your Dragon Defender grind, it's more efficient to focus on Black Armor for the reanimation. Here's why:
Killing black reanimations is more efficient than fighting higher-level ones, such as adamant or rune, which can take longer to kill.
Black armor offers the same token-to-HP ratio as rune armor, but the reanimated NPCs are significantly weaker, making them quicker to kill.
Step 5: Farm Tokens
Once you have gathered enough tokens, you'll need 500-1,000 tokens to progress to the next step. Head to the top floor of the Warrior's Guild with these tokens in your inventory. At this point, you will be able to enter the room with the Cyclopses, which drop the defenders.
100 tokens are required to enter the Cyclops room.
10 tokens will be deducted for each minute you spend inside.
Step 6: Fighting Cyclops for Bronze to Rune Defenders
Upon entering the Cyclops room, you will begin fighting the Cyclopes, which drop bronze, iron, steel, mithril, adamant, and rune defenders. However, you cannot directly skip to the Dragon Defender-you'll need to work your way through all the defender tiers.
Here's the process:
Kill Cyclopses to receive your bronze defender.
Show the bronze defender to Kamfreena, the NPC outside the room, to unlock the next tier (Iron).
Repeat this process until you get to the rune defender.
Each tier of defender drops at a rate of 1 in 50.
Step 7: Unlock the Dragon Defender
Once you have the Rune Defender, head to the basement of the Warrior's Guild, which can be accessed via a trapdoor near the food shop exit. Here, you'll find stronger level 106 Cyclopses that drop the Dragon Defender.
100 tokens are required to enter this room.
10 tokens will be deducted per minute you spend inside.
When you enter, you must show your rune defender to Lorelai, the NPC in the basement. After showing it once, you do not need to carry it with you again.
The Dragon Defender drops at a rate of 1 in 100 from the Cyclopses in the basement.
Step 8: Alternative Methods
If you want to speed up your progress, using the 99 Attack skill cape will allow you to enter either Cyclop's room without spending any tokens, as long as the cape is worn. This makes the grind significantly more efficient.
Additionally, consider using a Dragon Defender during the grind itself, as the boost it provides to melee stats can help you kill Cyclopses faster.
Final Thoughts
Obtaining the Dragon Defender in OSRS requires patience, but it is worth the effort for the massive boost it provides to your combat stats. Here's a summary of the steps:
Reach 60 Defence and ensure your Attack + Strength = 130 or have 99 in either skill.
Farm Warrior's Guild tokens using the Armour Reanimation Station (with Black armor).
Kill Cyclopses on the top floor of the Guild to collect defenders (from bronze to rune).
Show the rune defender to Lorelai and enter the basement to fight level 106 Cyclopses for the Dragon Defender.
If you're looking to make the grind more efficient, you can consider buying OSRS gold or specific OSRS items from trusted sources. Doing so can help you access better gear, potions, or supplies to maximize your training efforts. However, always choose reliable sources to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.
