How to link a Steam account in Phantasy Star Online 2

Gamers who wish to continue their progress with Phantasy Star Online 2 on Steam rather than Xbox or Windows can use this simple step-by-step guide.

With the Western release of Phantasy Star Online 2 on PC in May, many players experienced Sega's fun and unique combination of fantasy and science fiction for the first time after its first Japanese release in 2012. However, when Phantasy Star Online 2 came out for PC, it is only available from the Microsoft Store, causing die-hard Steam players to write off the game and give it no chance, while others complained of tons of bugs and installation issues plaguing the user experience.

As of yesterday, the game is available on Steam, along with loads of Valve-themed content, such as Gordon Freeman's iconic HEV suit. However, players who have sunk into Microsoft's Phantasy Star Online 2 version for hundreds of hours but want to switch to Steam need not fear. Sega has added an easy-to-use system for linking accounts and continuing your progress on the platform preferred by players.

The most important part of this process is that players cannot have characters on the new Phantasy Star account to which they are linked. After creating a character or setting a player ID on the new platform, players will no longer be able to merge their accounts later. With that in mind, here's how players can link their Xbox and Microsoft accounts to a new Steam account.

Players wishing to link their Xbox One or Windows account to the Steam version of the game must first open the account they started with. From there, select the help menu on the boot menu, and then select the option to issue an account link code.

Finally, players will need to launch the Steam version of Phantasy Star Online 2, access their ship, and enter the account link code provided in the previous step. If done correctly, players should now be able to continue playing as their PSO2 character on Steam. The same process can be followed to link the Steam version to the Xbox One or Windows version of the game, and players follow the same steps as before by simply starting with Steam.

It's no secret that Phantasy Star Online 2 was plagued by technical issues when it first launched on PC, leaving many players with disgust in their mouths. However, it seems gamers are enjoying this new version of the game and could pave the way for Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis as a smash hit expansion when it arrives next year.
