Just looking at what Foundling was told could leave you confused. Fortunately, the world is rich with details and additional information that help build a clearer picture of world history. The inscriptions and engravings in particular provide details that help fill the world and provide more detail than just the main story.

We're here to take a look at the knowledge and history of Mortal Shell so you can get a good sense of what's going on in the game and its history.

The Story of Mortal Shell

The key to understanding the story of Mortal Shell is to look at the history of the game world and how it got into the state in which it began.

This Wormfish is the heart of Mortal Shell and is arguably the most important ingredient in its amazing mix of sci-fi, fantasy and dark gothic horror. Mankind has sought immortality from the birth of sin. Many different sources have been used in the quest for eternal life and many experiments have been conducted, but an answer has been found in the unlikely place.

The Wormfish, a visitor from the Void, held the key to mankind's immortal future. We don't know what form it took, but as it said in the inscription, "The split worm becomes a new thing." This may be a reference to Unborn, the source of most of the game's plot.

The unborn are a parasite that travels with worms, they seem to be attracted to immortality, and as humans took on the dark gift and became immortal, they began to draw the unborn to themselves. They were known as the venerable.

A venerable dark father began to devour his own unborn. This turned his form into a grotesque parody of human life, and he was imprisoned for all eternity. His unborn child is collected for use by others. In every unborn child there is a gland that, when swallowed, provides certain powers. These can be glimpses into the future, access to the Void itself, and more.

To preserve humanity, sacrifices had to be made to feed the unborn. These gifts of humanity, or sacraments, took the form of flesh and blood, and even memory itself. Unfortunately, these sacrifices and the influence of the pious, immortal guardians of the sacraments of the unborn, in time, caused a terrifying madness to befall mankind.

In turn, the pious were tainted by the consumption of tar, a byproduct of the unborn glands, turning them into inhumane monsters.

The foundling

In Mortal Shell, you play as the Foundling, a pale creature with unique abilities in the world. It seems you should be a seedling, a descendant of the dark father who will give birth to the unborn and give humanity access to their pure nectar.

As you discover more about the world, you will learn that mankind's decline appears to be the result of the worship of false gods and the desire to become gods. As you play the game, seek the truth and tear the glands of the fallen Reverend and Pious, ending the pride of humanity. With the final boss, The Unchained, it becomes clear that it is you, not her, who is going to climb up and take your place in the pantheon. The child ultimately surpasses the father.

Mortal Shell may have a lot more to say and more details to discover. What have you gotten from Mortal Shell's knowledge and history?
