ACNH continues to expand the vibrant fashion community

One of the main attractions of Animal Crossing: New Horizons is collecting clothes and dressing the villager. Creative players are responding to a demand beyond the Skill Sisters can provide by hosting fashion shows, scheduling drops and taking over the New Horizons fashion world.

Animal Crossing players love to share content using creator codes. They've clearly done the same with gaming fashion, and it's a thriving part of the New Horizons fandom.

New Horizons fashion has advantages that are impossible at any other fashion company - for example, the ability to repeat quickly. New Horizons' social media-friendly nature also led to fashionistas who could easily share their casual outfits and stylish photos with their followers.

When the game launched, fashion shows in someone else's islands were popular. These have disappeared; now many players prefer smaller activities with friends. Throughout the fandom, there are networks of influencers setting trends. There are also larger business ventures in the space trying to capitalize on New Horizons' success.

"Animal Crossing's fashion community can be intense," says a designer named Riley. “Competition is fierce - not in person or with each other, it's about seeing your stuff. There is a lot of signal-to-noise.

Some designers have adapted to this problem using the practices of large, real fashion companies. Shiv is one of the players who spoke to Polygon via email after the new collection came out.

Shiv has been associated with art throughout her life. A wedding and portrait photographer, she was pleasantly surprised when she received a saree from one of her New Horizons residents. This inspired her and she spent all day using New Horizons' pixel adjustment to recreate her wedding slehega.

“I wanted to try and make something that really reflected the colors, textures and patterns of Indian textiles,” says Shiv. Rangeela is her first collection - the name is a Hindi word meaning "colorful" - and it enabled her to create her dream wardrobe.

Christine ended up in New Horizons because of the pandemic and blockage, starting with simple 2D images. After switching from plates to floor tiles, friends encouraged her to try on clothes. Since then, she's blown up Reddit twice with her butterfly collection.

Now Christine's real network has grown and she shares her inspiration and projects with other fans when she visits their island. "I'm talking to other creators who publish island designs and fashion designs," Polygon told Reddit DM. "Sometimes I go to people's islands to take pictures, sometimes we just talk about design for inspiration." The platform led her to a passion she never discovered outside of Animal Crossing.

However, there are some issues with New Horizons as a mod platform that can interfere with fan designs. “There needs to be more room for custom designs,” says Riley. “At the moment I am constantly deleting things I like and forgetting about the creators, so I can make room for new things or my own projects. It sucks.

Shiv hopes Nintendo will add more tools to assist developers in their projects. “I would love to use the stylus to draw projects that resemble a pin board. This would help with more complex work with patterns or shadows. I also wish there were a tool like the Animal Crossing Pattern Tool that allows us to use photos we have taken or are online to create outfits. "

But in the end, New Horizons' fashion side remains a tight-knit community.

“I love all the artists and I'm glad I found something I love,” says Riley. “At the moment I don't even play Animal Crossing for Animal Crossing. It's just a reason to hang out and do things with the people I love.
